The suspect in an alleged assassination attempt of Donald Trump has appeared in court in Florida on Monday and charged with firearms offences.

Ryan Routh, 58, was arrested on Sunday soon after what the FBI described as an “apparent” attempt to assassinate the former president at his Trump International Golf Course in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Secret Service agents opened fire after spotting a rifle barrel sticking out of bushes several hundred metres from where Trump was playing golf. The suspect fled and was arrested40 miles away.
